When we began to explore the topic of tragedy, the first thing I clicked on were the links pertaining to Oedipus because they appeared very interesting to me!
I find it extremely fascinating how philosophy can tie into psychology so well especially under the theme of tragedy. The story of Oedipus is very intriguing, in my opinion. His situation and the outcome is very ironic and through this irony it falls under the umbrella of tragedy. But, what I find more interesting is how the story is now connected to many other things in our society today. For example, the famous psychologist Sigmund Freud, has used the story of Oedipus to define and explain some of his theories and concepts. He believed that every thought or dream, or part of our subconscious, was somehow related to some sort of sexual desire. He uses what is called and Oedipus Complex to explain boys with unnatural attractions and sexual feelings for their mothers. It's interesting to me how people can view this as disgusting, but when you truly think about the story behind Oedipus, it is actually quite tragic.
